Canterbury Urology director Mr Milan Thomas, is an expert Consultant Urological Surgeon with over 15 years experience in Urology. He qualified from University College London Medical School in 2004. He started his NHS Consultant practice in East Kent University Trust in 2015.
Mr Thomas is passionate about high quality cancer care. He studied an intercalated BSc degree in Tumour Biology, at University College London in 2001. Since then he has dedicated his training and expertise in urological cancer treatments and diagnosis, having worked in established high volume centres in Manchester, including The Christie Hospital. Here he was trained in major surgery to manage prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers. He remains one of the few surgeons able to do open major abdominal surgery in the region. In the last 10 years he dedicated his expertise in renal (kidney) cancer surgery using the Da Vinci robot and the service has now expanded to a high volume centre of excellence in robotic kidney treatments.
As a proven leader - Mr Thomas has been the Lead Clinician for the Department of Urology, the Lead Cancer Clinician and was a member of the Medical Clinical Leadership team implementing the electronic health record and requesting system at East Kent NHS Trust. He is a member of the Cancer Reference Group for Kent and Medway Cancer Alliance.
Sharing expertise through training and research - Milan is an assigned educational supervisor for the future Urology surgical consultants for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery. He is also an assigned trainer for Foundation Year doctors at East Kent NHS Trust. Milan is currently a Principal Investigator for the Partial Trial - investigating the benefits of partial nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma - kidney cancers.
Mr Thomas has significant expertise in Men’s Health having initiated the first Men’s Health Clinic in East Kent. He is a specialist in surgical treatments for male urinary difficulties (also known as BPH lower urinary tract symptoms). This incorporates a prostate health check to assess for prostate cancer. He leads the “Blood in urine” health assessment clinic in Kent and Canterbury Hospital and has a dedicated clinic for Male LUTS.

PROSTATE
Men’s prostates can enlarge causing obstruction to urinary flow and symptoms such as urgency, frequent urination and getting up at night.
However urinary difficulties can be caused by many other conditions including prostate cancer.
Urethral strictures can also cause similar symptoms.

Milan is an expert in kidney cancer and complex kidney operations. He is a proficient at robotic, laparoscopic and open surgery - having performed over 1000 major kidney operations in East Kent.
Kidney lesions are commonly found on community ultrasound scans. If you need advice on an unexpected finding then please arrange an appointment to discuss this further.

Bladder/Blood in pee
Blood in urine is a common finding.
If this is visible to you then you need urgent investigations including an abdominal scan and a flexible cystoscopy - which is a simple test performed under local anaesthesia to completely visualise the bladder.
Mr Thomas will advise on whether any further tests are required. Sometimes you can avoid investigations when the the blood is invisible and picked up on a urine test analysis at your GP practice. Having a discussion with a specialist could avoid unnecessary tests.
